The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd edition of the FIFA WC 2022, the quadrennial international men's football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2022. This will be the first World Cup held in the Arab world and the second held in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. The tournament is to be the last to involve 32 teams, with an increase to 48 teams scheduled for the 2026 tournament, and will be the first held in the Middle East. The decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was controversial, and was the subject of criticism and allegations of corruption. There have also been calls for the tournament to be moved to another country or to be postponed or cancelled.

This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country. It will be the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. In addition, the tournament will be the last to involve 32 teams, with an increase to 48 in the 2026 tournament.:2 The tournament is to be played in a reduced timeframe of around 28 days, with the final to take place on 18 December 2022, which is also Qatar National Day.:1 As of June 2019, the only confirmed stadiums for the tournament are the Khalifa International Stadium, the Al Bayt Stadium and the Education City Stadium. The tournament will also use the Qatar Foundation Stadium and the Lusail Iconic Stadium, which are both currently under construction.:3 In February 2019, FIFA confirmed that the competition would be expanded to 48 teams, with each team to play a minimum of two matches.:4 The format of the tournament will be a group stage followed by a knockout stage. The tournament will be the first World Cup to use the video assistant referee (VAR) system.:5 The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd edition of the FIFA WC 2022, the quadrennial international men's football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA.
